Gatsby Vs. Tom: Likes and Differences

Q: Compare and contrast Gatsby and Tom. How are they alike? How are they different? given the extremely negative light in which Tom is portrayed throughout the novel, why might Daisy choose to remain with him instead of leaving him for Gatsby?

A: Throughout the novel, The Great Gatsby, we are given two men that have made huge impacts on the life of Daisy. Gatsby was her first love, thinking he was going to be her lover the rest of her life. Unfortunately, he decided to go to fight in the war for years, followed by his decision to attend Oxford for a few months in the army program. When he returned, Daisy was married and with another man who she is expect to live her life with until the day she dies. Tom and his entire family is part of the old money, having it for many past years. Gatsby is part of the new money society, acquiring his funds more recently and having grown up from a less fortunate family then Tom did when he was younger. Even while Gatsby was away he still had feelings for his Daisy and continued to have them when he returned, disappointed to find that she has married another man. He continues to try to get her back and convince her to leave her husband. Tom on the other hand, might love her, but not with the same passion as Gatsby. Tom was lucky enough to be able to marry her in the beginning, but he has proven to be unfaithful and a cheater. Gatsby proves to be more faithful and more passionate about the love he shares with Daisy as does she with him. Tom just shows him jealousy and his desire to keep her as his possession out of the reach of Gatsby, not for his love.

Throughout the story, Tom is portrayed as a terrible person, because he truly is one. He is able to marry a truly kind woman and has taken advantage of the kindness she has and her timidness to stand up to his behavior. Ever since the beginning of their marriage, Tom has been unfaithful, keeping an apartment in the city for him and his other woman that he fools around with. He has even been able to get her families respect and approval, more for his amount of money not for the love he has for Daisy. He tries to be subtle and secretly rude to Gatsby and to intimidate standing his ground. He has learned of the feelings that Gatsby and Daisy share for each other, and in response, decides to keep a close eye on her where ever he goes. All he does through the novel is push people around him because of the amount of money he possesses. He is able to obtain anything his heart desires, even the affection of Daisy. In my opinion, Gatsby and Daisy should run away into the sunset leaving Tom behind to sit in his own self pity and sorrow.

Unfortunately, Daisy has very little choice whether to stay with Tom or leave and go with Gatsby. If she were to leave and run away with Gatsby she would loose her family, friends, and her daughter probably as well. In the society she and Tom live in, they are expect to be together, even though Tom only looks at her as a possession, not the woman of his life. But in exchange for leaving that life behind, she would be rewarded with the true love that Gatsby has for her and the opportunity to start anew and live much more happily and faithfully. She has to contemplate which she would rather have before she is able to run away or stay with what she has going for her so far.

Throughout the story, we watch Daisy and Tom's relationship go through many obsticles and all the hardships they encounter. How her family has forced her into a marriage unwillingly is pathetic in how much they truly love and cherish her wishes. She had to show up on the alter drunk in order to continue with what she was being dropped into. This unstable beginning started the continuing pattern that follows through the story, chapter by chapter with similar actions and events. You can only question and ponder what would have happened if she married Gatsby in the first place and how different her life would be. The pressure her parents have put on her also helps to effect the way she and Tom raise their only daughter and how much they really care about her. Niether of them even mention the childs name in the story. Her life with Gatsby would be much more passionate and sincere compared to the lies that she lives through and ignores through their entire relationship. Tom's unloyalty has begun even since the honeymoon they spent in Hawaii.

Overall, the reasons that Daisy stays in the situation she is currently in does not compare to what opportunities that she has been presented by the life Gatsby has offered to her. She is stuck in a rut because of the lack of emotion that her family portrays on herself and her marriage. She is stuck from the pressure she has on society and the expectency that she is to by with such a rich, respectful man. Little do they know what she is really enduring.

'Thriftiness' and saving money

Q: In the article, Ellen Goodman asks, "Will our 'thriftiness' last only as long as the recession?" What do you think? Is your family still spending as much, or have you slowed down?

A: During the Great Depression, banks went bankrupt, people lost great amounts of money, and the economy was shot into the ground. 30% of our country was left jobless without any opportunity to find a new one quickly. People were left without an income while watching the rest of the world crumble in the same way.

Today, we have some of the same failures and events as those that happened during the Great Depression. Many recessions are occurring, people are losing their jobs, and you can find every citizen in America saving money and trying to cut down on what they spend. As the recession continues, people will continue to save what they have because people are continuing to lose jobs and money. Everyone you meet is counting what they have, searching for the bargain deals, even cutting down for this Christmas season with friends and family just because of the terrible economy we are forced to live in for now. We have even seen gas prices plummet after the highest price around about $4.50, depending on where you live, down to about $1.30 locally. So, yes, i believe that 'our thriftiness' will continue as long as this recession continues.

My family is cutting down somewhat. When my mom goes to the grocery store, she tries to wait until we have about no food in the pantry to go to the store and comes back with tons of food to completely fill the room. Trips up to Redding are the same. She tries to combine all her errands into a one, all day thing in order to keep from going up there more then once a week. We have made small changes, but nothing too extreme that keeps us from our day to day activities.

How Language Determines Your Education

Q: How is our understanding of culture and society constructed through and by language?

A: In the novel, The Great Gatsby, people are defined and placed in different classes in society depending on how they speak and with how much intelligence in exemplified in their everyday speech. Language is one form of how to identify someones intelligence and how and where they were raised. Each character in the story is looked upon in society in his class partly because of the way people relate to each other and converse with those around him.

Based on the way words are spoken you are able to determine which part of the country or which country that specific person was raised and educated. People from different parts of the country have developed different forms of saying words and spellings as well. Education takes a big part in the way people speak to each other as well. People with a higher education will use more vocabulary and more proper English that someone with less education who will tend to use more slang words. The way people talk, speak to each other, and write are definite ways to be able to distinguish where someone was raised and was educated.

And Then There Was One

Q: Do you agree or disagree with Naughton, the author of the article? Why or why not?

A: The decision here is to combine "The Big Three" inot one bigger company in an attempt to stay out of reach of bankruptcy. When looking at the big picture and just thinking of what the end outcome is then the idea sounds great, the solver of all the problems. Well, think again. Many other options have been thought up. Some include letting the three countries end and restart anew. Another includes federal assistance jumping in and giving some loans to keep them above the ground. None of these show what will happen to those smaller then the big picture.

The option that Naughton believes would be very effective is combining the three big companies into one and having them lean on each other for support to make it out of the storm. This reformation is greatly needed in order to get them back up on their feet. Unfortunately, if that were to happen many jobs would be lost. This industry contains millions of job offers to those around the country and many of those would be lost in the combination of the companies. Collectively the companies are believed to going through about $6 billion each month and will have used about $30 billion on the next year. Naughton believes that Detroit could just focus on the companies that sell and have the best incomes and leave "the clunkers" to wither and fall out helping to be a little resolving of the bigger problem. This idea of having a combination seems to have great long-term changes but for the people involved now and the employees will slowly but laid off and lose millions of jobs.

Other options suggested would be to have the federal government come in and either take over or help to pay some of the money lost. That would only help to resolve the problem for a short while. It would also make the companies into an either further debt causing them to only dig a deeper hole.

Another option suggested is to stop all that they have going right now and starting anew and rebuild the great empire that is currently and slowly deteriorating. This option seems to have a terrible short-term outcome but it would also resolve a lot of problems that we currently have for the years to come.

Whatever the end outcome will be for "The Big Three", hopefully it will help restore their growing problems without losing so many employees and will stabilize what has been lost.

Enlightening about College Education in Shasta County

Q: Why is this important? Compared to the statewide average, how many people in Shasta County have post-high school degrees? Why do you think there is such a difference? Be specific!

A: Unfortunately, we do not have many kids in our high school with parents that encourage them as much as they should. Most of our classmates do not have parents making comments like "...when you go to college..." and "After you graduate from college..." that help make them believe that it is a necessity to live their lives and to make a living. That helps take a toll on how much perseverance they have to make it into a bigger college or to even go to Shasta College.

Others do not apply themselves because they believe they cannot afford to go. To educate those people, there are plenty of scholarships out there and grants and even loans that are willing to help out. There is no reason that anybody should say that they cannot go to college for whatever reason. Unfortunately, those are the people that have not been encouraged or have not been enlightened that there are endless possibilities to make these things happen.

The statewide average for those who have a bachelor's degree is 29.5%. For Shasta County, its at only 18.8% which is at a high from previous years where it was only 16% or even lower. Programs like the CPEC (California Postsecondary Education Commission) are out there to help those around us to know the possibilities that are available and can be obtained with a little work or just even stumbling over it and finding it. They are out there trying to help and the number of people who have seeked help by visiting that program has increased by 67%. Little changes and these attempts will help those out there to get an education and hopefully we will see the number of people who attend ascend even more.

In my opinion, parents and those around us, including teachers, friends, family, etc., definitely encourage teenagers and young adults to apply themselves to attend any size college. those simple sayings like "...when you go to college..." help put the rite state of mind in their heads that there is no other option to live other then to go. Small steps help to get us to bigger achievements. The difference from the Statewide average and Shasta County is the lack of knowledge that is put out to enlighten those who know little of the subject.

The Great Gatsby and Nick Carraway

Q: What do we know about Nick Carraway and the Gatsby?

A: Nick Carraway thinks of himself as high moral and tolerant. He narrarates the story and tells of the hero, Gatsby, who he describes as "nothing short of gorgeous." It starts off with Nick in the summer of 1922 in New York where he is renting a house in the West Egg in Long Island. East Egg and West Egg are set different by wealth and taste. He knows of Gatsby because the West Egg is next door to the Gatsby's mansion. Nick graduated from Yale and has a lot of connections on the East Egg, which sets him apart from his neighbors and the people he is associating with.

One night, Nick goes to East Egg to have dinner with his cousin Daisy, her husband Tom Buchanan, and her friend Jordan Baker. When he is leaving he gets a hint from Tom and Daisy to take an interest in Jordan. As he arrives home, he sees Gatsby for the first time looking out across the water. He describes him as a handsome, young man, but he cannot find what Gatsby is looking at out in the dark.

Should Perscription Drugs Be Allowed in TV Ads?

Q: Do you agree or disagree with Stephen King's ad? Should drug companies be allowed to advertise prescription drugs directly to consumers through TV ads?

A: I agree with Stephen King and the point he is trying to get across to Americans. He states that the American public soaks up the ideas that the TV ads show and how they will create a fast-acting relief to get rid of whatever they are advertising. It is pretty pathetic when the Merck's U.S. ad budget is far bigger then Pepsi Co. What does that tell you? These ads are showing the public what they want to see, immediate relief. When will you ever see an ad showing what could happen when using the drug for a long period of time or how it effects certain people? Never. Unfortunately, Americans get bamboozled into the quick fix they are being shown only because they WANT to believe that there is something out there to solve all their problems. Every ad has some sort of little talking animal character or showing a before and after clip of someone who has taken the drug. Stephen King made many great points to how we just soak up what is said and hope that what was said is true.

These drug ads should not be allowed to be advertised unless they show the full results of what will happen for each situation. Pharmacists are there for a reason, to be able to prescribe and give advise to people around the nation of how to cure whatever pain they are experiencing. England and many other European countries have banned the ads from their television sets, and for a good reason. They have gone through the experience of the thalidomide resulting on their community and why would they want to go through something that drastic again? Good thing we did not have those ads on our sets or the idea would of been gobbled up by the American public in a flash. Bottom line, these drug ads should not be allowed to advertise on television and sway the public to a fast acting relief idea without knowing the true potential these have. There is a reason of doctors.

Samuelson's Article

Q: What is Samuelson's point? Why does he believe this?

A: Samuel believes that we are in the same state as we were in the 1920's when the Great Depression was happening. Panic in the states, both political and economical, are overcoming the people and becoming the enemy.

Many similarities are occuring now as they were in the 1920's, but there are differences as well. one would be that the federal government is much more involved in the economy then it use to be during the Great Depression. In 1929, it was ony about 3%, but now it has grown to 20%. The Federal Government now is involved in building new roads, Social Security, and defense. Now, they are trying to contain the problem quicker then they ever have done in the past.

He focuses on the fact that many "economic slumps" have occurred since the Great Depression, but none were as bad as that. Yes, there is a greater unemployment rate, but none have been able to scale as that of the 1930's. The closest we have had is 9.0 from 1973-75 and 10.8 from 1981-82, but they still do not compare to the numbers of the 1930's. In september, we were at 6.1% unemployment.

These changes in our economy, as well as many other aspects that afffect our American society, are all because of the immense amount of money being spent, over borrowing, and overinvestment. He does not believe that it will scale as it did during the Great Depression, but the numbers will flunctuate many times before it will finally become stable.

COLLEGES

Q: What are two colleges that you would like to apply to? For what reasons?

A: Growing up I've always been told that i have to prepare for college and it will take a lot of work to get there. My dad graduated from Cal Poly with an engineering degree. My mother, unfortunately, never completed college because she became pregnant with me, but she has been supporting and pushing me to not follow what she did and get a degree.

One college i would like to apply to and hopefully be accepted to would be U.C. Davis. I have visited the campus on many occasions taking personal tours with current students of the campus. I've seen the outsides of the buildings, to the insides of the labs and libraries, and even the dorms for the freshman and their living arrangements. One reason would include that it has the top veterinary program in the state and the third in the country. It is known as one of the last "small town" universities of its kind. I am hoping to be able to receive a degree in zoology and veterinary and be able to work and interact with exotic species and be able to travel the world to study them. UC Davis would be a start to this goal. The school also has many different majors and the luxury of changing if the major you chose is not actually what you wanted.

Another college i would be interested into applying to would include UC Berekley. They have many different majors to choose from as well. Unfortunately, i have not been able to visit the campus or see the buildings and students. The experience seems very confortable and lively. I Plan to visit hopefully sometime soon before i have to apply to colleges.

I am still researching schools and colleges and still keeping my mind open to new things. i am hoping to find some more information before making a final choice.

Declaration vs. Iroquois Compact vs. Patrick Henry's Speech

Q: what are the common issues in the Declaration, the Iroquois Compact, and Patrick Henry's Speech to the Virginia Convention?

A: The common disputes and problems addressed in all three documents include the issues that have occurred, opinions made about those problems, and the actions that need to occur to address them.

The Declaration of Independence addresses the issues that England did not follow through with and the rights that the Colonists thought they were obligated to obtain. In the first couple of paragraphs it states the rights that all men should have, such as, "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." It directs its attention to what they were deprived and refused while under the control of Great Britain. They felt used throughout Britain's reign on the thirteen colonies and declared a declaration to confront Parliament of what they felt they needed. It outlines each dispute they had with Britain and how they will handle it differently under their own government. Many more rights were given to the people along with greater responsibilities if something goes array.

The Iroquois Constitution declared the rights that the Iroquois Native Americans were not given. Its starts with how all men are equal and they have rights to the land as much as the whites who came to overtake it. It refers to the Laws of Great Peace and those who go astray from it can follow it back and be accepted for this mistakes as long as they promise to obey the wishes of the Council. It is very similar to the Declaration of Independence, only it is referring to different people and different issues. Although, they are much more similar then they appear. They both outline what is in the wrong, their opinion of what should be done about them, and the rights they feel they are entitled to. The Iroquois Constitution breaks up its issues and rights into 5 different categories and the responsibilities of each one.

The speech of Patrick Henry against the Virginia Convention made a great impact. He declared the rights that he felt the people were entitled to that they were not given by the English Parliament. He states how he feels that England is not going to change their ways no matter how much the Colonies confront them. He speaks of how he wants liberty and they will have to make it on their own. He states the problems that have come from being under the English Parliment. He then states his opinion of what went wrong and what needs to be done to address them. He went as far as the say, "Give me liberty, or give me death."

All three very distinctly address the issues that England had caused. They went on with how those did not help their growing nation and how they did not agree with what was already happening. All three made a point to show the extremity and what is needed to be done in order to make order and liberty.

Favorite Book

Q: Which book did you prefer and why? Be specific with examples from the books.

A: So much though is put into novels that we are so unaware of. John Steinbeck would be one of the many authors that does this without our knowledge. He used alot of detail and assets to create his novel East of Eden. He interwine himself and his family, conflicts, and creativeness all together to combine into a marvelous story of the late 1800's to early 1900's.

I prefer the book East of Eden because I like how Steinbeck used the book as a retelling of his family history. He used his family as the Hamilton family characters in the story, using their personalities and characteristics to shape and reenact the way that his family members came to the Salinas Valley from Ireland and learned to survive. Some examples of family members were Samuel and Liza Hamilton, which were John Steinbeck's grandparents. He used half of the story to enlighten his children, while using the other half to create another story line.

I Also like how John Steinbeck created his own characters to intertwine with the story of his ancestry. One character would be Cathy Ames. The way he was able to describe her and express his hatred for such a person was amazing. He described her as cat-like, which is one of his great dislikes. He also made such a complicated and intricate family filled with emotions and past experiences that all the characters have experienced previously. The Trask family starts with how Adam and his family grows and molds. He goes through terrifying experiences with his brother trying to kill him and his lack of love for his father. This later retaliates as how he reacts to his own children when he becomes older. I loved how detailed and intertwined John Steinbeck made the story lines of the two families criss-cross into one amazing novel.

Another asset that i liked in the story was how he used different inner conflicts within the story. He used one as free will verses chance. He showed countless examples within the story of how each character was confronted with these choices. One would include Samuel's decision to confront Adam about not naming his sons. He made the choice to go over and made him realize what he is doing to his own family. He also used good verses evil. He made and reenacted characters through the story of how morally good or evil they really were. Cathy was a created character that he expressed with insane choices and hatred. He also retold his story of his grandfather, Samuel Hamilton, and how he was such a good-hearted and caring man and how he tried to provide for his family and inprove the lives of others within his town. He was also able to intertwine the story of Cain and Abel as well. He made the characters Adam and Charles tell the story of Cain and Abel, Charles being Cain and Adam being Able. I loved how much detail and characteristics that Steinbeck used to create this amazing American novel.

Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

Q: Is the world going to end?

A: Scientists are trying to see the "black mass" that is keeping everything in balance. In my opinion, i do not think the world is going to end. They have been studying this for years apon years about what is going to result from this experience. The experiement has been planned and constructed for the past 20 years with scientists of all kinds from over 80 different countries. If something was too unpredictable and uncontrollable they would have called it off from the beginning.
I think the people that are going against it in world courts trying to stop the exeriment from being performed are not aware of all the mechanics and mathematics that have been put into this project. They have not been educated enough or researched enough to know the true outcoem of the experiment. As far as i see it, they are living in fear of the future. The fear is that it will get out of control and send the earth into a huge black hole annialateing us all.
In one of the videos that we watched, they made a comment that the force the sun puts on the earth and all the other planets is much greater then what the experiement can perform. It is meant to "revolutionize our understanding, from the miniscule world deep within the atoms of vastness of the Universe."It is intended to open the world of Physics and solve the questions and unknowns in the laws of Nature. I am very interested in the science and mathematics that they had to put in to even begin to create the machines and how they can predict a little of what is to come of it. I am curious of the result of the project, what they will discover from the research, and how much more knowledge will come from this one collision.

Adam vs. Ishmael

Q: In what ways are Ishmael and Adam alike?

A: The characters Ishmael and Adam are alike in many different ways. One example would include they are both the protagonists of their own stories. Another would be that they both have extreme effects on the lives of others. Adam has effected his two sons and Ishmael had a choice between giving evidence for Kabuo's trial or keeping it to himself. Both are changing the pattern of a fellow characters life/lives.
Both Ishmael and Adam have been experienced with war and military, although Ismael lost his arm and was sent home, while Adam just finished and left. This left Ishmael haunted by the trama of war.
Both men have loved and lost. In Adams case, his wife Cathy was insane and didn't care about him in the way he did for her. She did not care enough to shoot to kill when she had a gun pointed straight at him. In Ishmael's, he was in love with a Japanese woman, hasue, which was not allowed in their society at the time during World War II. She ended up marrying another man. Unfortunately, they both overcome the pain and in the end, accepted the fact that they were not going to have the women they wished to have.
As a result, both men have become lonely and apart from the world they live in. They became seperated and antisocial. Adam stays at home not leaving very often. Ishmael and Adam both had to find courage and maturity to continue within themselves and continue their lives.

Learning to Read

Q: When and how did you learn to read?

A: When my mom was pregnant she would read to me before I was even born. As I grew up she continued to read to me stories of Dr. Suess and other picture books like Go Dog Go. When I was little I had paper that had the letters on it and I was able to trace the letters and rewrite them over and over. Eventually, I was able to form letters without the special paper. Then, I was able to read the books my mom use to read to me like Horton Hears a Who and such. Those little picture books turned into smaller printed books with chapters consisting of a few pages. The book size continued to grow and the print continued to minimize. Small books grew into larger ones like Judy Bloom and then into Harry Potter and The Series of Unfortunate Events. My mom sat by my side many nights and listened to me read and helped my with words i did not know or could not say. They have always had small books for me to pick up and read for my own pleasure. When I was little I would read any chance I got, but now I do not as much.

Good vs. Evil

Q: One of Stheinbeck's themes in "the freedom to choose between good and evil." Do you think this modifies the Cain and Abel story? Why or why not?

A: No, I don't think it modifies it, I believe it examplifies it. In the story of Cain and Abel, they both decide to make sacrifices to God just as their parents had done so. Abel decided to give his best lamb in his field and Cain chose to give some of his extra straw he has left over from his field. Clearly, God had chosen Abel's gift as more sincere then Cain's. Through jealousy, Cain killed his brother and lied to God about what had happened to Abel.
I think this is just a fantastic example of how there is "freedom to choose between good and evil." They were both given the chance to see who would care more about God's response then of themselves. Obviously, Abel made a more selfless act rather then Cain's selfish one. Abel made a good choice to show his loyalty and respect to God. Unfortunately, once Cain killed him, Cain did not care of his brothers death but of someone seeing his action. He did not realize the extremity of it until he was confronted by God himself. The story is just a biblical tale of the freedom a person has to choose between good and evil.

Free Will vs. Chance

Q: Both books deal with the theme of free will vs. chance. What events are chosen of a characters's free will, what events are chance?

A: In the story Snow Falling on Cedars, out of many examples, one is how Kabuo Miyamoto is an innocent, japanese fisherman that was blamed for the murder of Carl Heine, a white fisherman. Because of his race and the way he looks he is blamed for the murder. that is a example of chance. He was not able to choose his fate and what was to become of him. Ishmael decided to kiss Hatsue after having feelings for her for so long. The choice made though was Hatsue in deciding that she cares more about him then what the community or the world would look apon them. During Etta's testimony, she flashes back to how Carl decided to sell 7 acres of land to Kabuo's father, Zenhichi. That was his choice to sell that and make it a eight-year lease-to-own contract in order to help the family out in their time of need.
A few examples from East Of Eden would include Aron and his decision to join the war. He was not drafted and forced to enter the war, he made the choice to risk his life for his country. Catherine also decided to lock Mr. Edwards out of the house, out of her craziness. It wasn't because he was cruel to her or anything of the sort making her do it out of safety.

Monsters in the World

Q: Do you agree with Steinbeck's premise that there "are monsters born in the world"?

A: I do not agree with his premise. I don't think that they are born, but that they are created. experiences and influences help people and creatures become who they are. Everyone has a unique personality that takes part in how they are too. Both personality and experiences take part in how they will react to things when they mature and are forced to go through bigger experiences and hardships.
People are presented with choices almost everyday and everyone will react to it in a diverse way. the character Cathy in East of Eden has been created as a monster. She is wicked in many ways. When she was younger her parents had great views for her future, but perhaps from her view she was being pressured into something she wanted nothing to do with. Maybe from her view of what her parents wanted her to be made her a little crazy perhaps because she couldn't handle it, even though they were great people. She was an unusual child and who knows what Steinbeck's intentions were when he created her.
Overall, everyone is made unique bound by personality and past experiences. A saying i really believe in is "You don't now somebody if you don't know their story."
